Too Much Punch For Judy

Pre-loading, peer pressure, driving while distracted, can you really handle your drink?

Drinking is frequent in our society, a rite of passage. From teens to adults, it’s a part of many people’s everyday lives, but with the drinking, there can come some serious consequences. Yes, it’s made very clear that we shouldn’t drink while under the influence, but hey it’s only this one time, right?  I only need to drive 5 minutes down the road, and we’re in the country. I have not had that much to drink!

These are the things we are still telling ourselves even after seeing all the horrific adverts and posters, it’s like we have become immune to the message.

Theatre provides the chance to engage and connect in the moment, it is live and immediate. Our goal is to provoke conversations around driving while under the influence.

“Too Much Punch for Judy” by Mark Wheeller has been performed by Aidan Theatre in 2015, 2018 and now 2020,  receiving great reviews and feedback. With the support of Road Safety South Canterbury, the team at Aidan Theatre are now bringing it to a bigger audience to get the conversations happening again, with students, their peers and the wider community.

Play Summary

‘Too Much Punch For Judy’ by Mark Wheeller “May 20th 1983… a lonely road near Epping… a car comes off the road and hits a bridge. The scaffolding construction slices through the car. The driver, Judy, escapes unhurt, but the passenger, her sister, Joanna is killed outright. Joanna and Judy were on their way home from an aerobics session followed by a trip to the local Wine Bar. They had both been drinking. This tragic incident was dramatised by Mark Wheeller in 1986 using only the words of those most closely involved and affected. Since that time it has become one of the most performed plays ever.”

A further note after this summary is that this particular script, that which we are performing from, has been revised for modern audiences and updated with a further tragic accident. Although the original incident was set in Essex in 1983, the impact of this piece has not been dampened with age. It is a poignant and evolving story, that no matter the timeline, holds truth in the words of different people and their experiences with drink driving.

The team is made up of recent graduates of Victoria University of Wellington’s Theatre department, Teag Mackay, Daniel Nodder, Dominic Flanagan and Prea Millar, Timaru based actress, Kate Low and Director Kimble Henderson (MTA)
